Volunteers from our local community making a difference

2nd March 2025 - West end of Wheatsheaf Lane

A voluntary group of residents from Silvery Sands Residents Association (SSRA) gathered to clear the over grown shrub at the west end of Wheatsheaf lane where it meets the river Thames. Apart from recent path works carried out by SSRA the area had become unkept and overgrown. The end of Wheatsheaf Lane has always been recognised as land maintained by SSRA as it provides many valuable functions for our members such as:

Emergency Access to the towpath and river bank
Resident and public pedestrian access

The work party took a couple of days to clear the area, with many trips to the dump. It is now a much more attractive and accessible area and much easier to see if anything untoward was occurring. It was discovered that construction material including Asbestos has been dumped on both sides of the road. As the verges are maintained by SSRA and are part of the public / residents access, this is a hazard and we ask residents to be more careful and thoughtful in future.

There is a gas main that services Thames Side that runs beside No 72 Thames Side and then along the middle of the towpath towards Silvery Sands. This is an important service that SSRA did not want to become damaged by root growth etc. We have been notified that the River Thames Scheme intend to use part of this area when the relief work starts.

Please keep a look out for any fly tipping or any other suspicious activity and report it to the police immediately. We would welcome you to keep the Neighbourhood Watch Coordinator updated too.
